Why read it
For fans of
This long-running series returns with its focus on a young man already known as the strongest in his school, now facing the uncomfortable reality that middle school is ending. Graduation and the question of what comes next hang over him, even though he would rather ignore it entirely and keep living exactly as he always has.
That is easier said than done. Being the strongest in town means being a target, and the delinquents of Hakata are not content to let him drift quietly toward adulthood. Challenges keep finding him, whether he wants them or not, and the pressure to prove himself again and again does not let up just because the calendar says his school days are numbered.
Into this tense, restless stretch comes a transfer student from Kanagawa, arriving well after the normal time for such things. His presence immediately shakes up the balance the hero has grown used to. The two of them end up provoking each other, each pushing the other toward something neither can quite name yet, and that friction becomes the heart of the story as the two of them share what remains of their middle school years.
Readers drawn to stories about young toughs testing their limits against each other, set in the specific social world of school-age rivalries and reputations, will find plenty to like here. The tone is physical and confrontational but also carries a real sense of time running out, since both leads know their current world is about to end whether they are ready or not.
There is an appeal here for anyone who enjoys a story built on the tension between two strong personalities forced into the same small space, especially when that space is about to disappear. The looming graduation gives even small confrontations a sharper edge, and the arrival of a new rival ensures the hero's last stretch of middle school is anything but quiet.
